How to: Installing a VISORDOK - WOLFBOX Camera Mount

When we purchased our van, we quickly realized rear visibility was hindered by the rear door jamb which put a blind spot directly behind us. Back in 2021, Mid-City Engineering released an "always-on" OBD2 programmer which overrode the factory Mercedes programming that disabled the rearview camera feed when the vehicle speed exceeds 5mph.

The only option for us at the time was to purchase a programmer, which did exactly as advertised, but introduced some unforeseen inconveniences. While using the always-on feed, you lose access to other Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) functionality, such as Apple Carplay and music control. We tried to work around this issue by using the OEM navigation system which integrates turn-by-turn directions on the small driver's display. While it worked, it lacked any sort of detail for upcoming turns, lane preference, etc. We prefer the navigation apps available on our phones as opposed to the Mercedes navigation, as they provide more detailed instructions than the built-in nav. MB Maps also requires manual updates, involving fairly large files which are time-consuming to load.

The always-on feature, in our experience, could also be finicky - sometimes it would kick out of the view and we often had to change views for better view-angles. It was cumbersome, but it solved the rear visibility problem.

Another company released "lift wedges" to raise the field of view of the rear camera. While this product successfully raised the field of view, it introduced another problem - skewed, inaccurate reverse lines on the MBUX display. The reverse lines were not accurate enough to rely on when driving or parking in reverse.

We were gifted a WOLFBOX G840S rearview mirror camera by a van friend who was not going to install it. The rearview camera includes a forward-mounted camera on the housing and an externally-mounted rear camera which allows unobstructed views and full functionality of the MBUX since the camera display is attached to the stock mirror!

While we find the rearview mirror camera to be the best solution, we encountered one minor issue upon installation: its weight. The camera mirror is too heavy for the factory windshield mount, and the mirror assembly droops when it gets hot and the plastic softens.

To address this issue, Terra X Innovations (www.terraxinnovations.com) released a better mount that integrates with their VISORDOK product line. Assuming the WOLFBOX camera system is already installed in your vehicle, the WOLFBOX mount is easily installed onto the VISORDOK, mating with the WOLFBOX camera display, and allows the factory rearview mirror to be removed completely. This mount is sturdier than the stock mount and also includes silicon tape to firm up the friction in the ball-mount if needed. Installation of the VISORDOK and WOLFBOX mount takes about an hour, and can be done by anyone.

If you're planning on installing the VISORDOK on your rig, get your tools ready and scroll down to the video how-to below.

Tools required for Install:

  • Phillips head screwdriver

  • Allen wrench, included with WOLFBOX mount

  • Torx driver

  • Flathead screwdriver (for wedging between the tabs on the visor-mount trim, aids in removal)
